Now for the Rest of the Net
- UK’s TalkTalk sent out an “investigator” to go around and download bootleg songs through any WiFi hotspots found. The point was to show that disconnecting file-sharers on the basis of IP alone is not a good idea. Bravo!
- New camera promises to capture your whole life. What the headline said.
- Would you buy a personal supercomputer (for $8K)?. Again, what the headline said.
- Apple gets best spot in EU browser ‘ballot screen,’ Mozilla says. So Mozilla is slamming a Microsoft proposal—because it’s too favorable for Apple! Huh?
- Totally OT: Daniel Beaty’s riveting speech about the choices you can make.

PC-Z1: Sharp’s Ubuntu-powered, touchscreen “Mobile Internet Tool”
Aug 27, 2009 Technology

In Japan, Sharp has been known for their ultra-mobile Zaurus for quite a while now, and today, the company added a new mini device to its line-up of mini laptops, the PC-Z1 [press release in English]. Marketed as a “Mobile Internet Tool”, the PC-Z1 comes with a tiny 5-inch TFT LCD (a touchscreen) and measures just 161.4 x 108.7 x 19.7 ~ 24.8mm (weight: 409g). MSI’s Wind Top AE: sexy, compact, touchscreen and affordable all-in-one?
Aug 27, 2009 Technology

I have to say, this is a — excuse me — a damn fine looking all-in-one PC. Why, if it weren’t for the somewhat out-of-place strip of leather, I might just nab one of these Wind Top AE2010 things right now. Actually, I have no use for all-in-ones, but for the budget-and-design-conscious PC user, this thing looks like the holy grail.

UAVs can do more than kill without compunction?
Aug 27, 2009 Technology

And here I thought that these drones were born to kill. In fact, they’re being put to good use, and such as the ones they’ve got cruising in the ocean , or these, which they’ve deployed to help combat wildfires. The drones can go into dangerously smoky areas and use IR cameras to point out hot spots for firefighters — man and machine working alongside one another like brothers

I love my home state for a number of reasons, but this is just one more reason why Oregon kicks ass. Portland, OR-based clothier Nau’s billfold wallet is perfect for any world traveler.

Addonics touts first portable Blu-ray player, except its not
Aug 27, 2009 Technology

On one hand, the Addonics Pocket Blu-ray/DVDRW packs eSATA and USB 2.0, but it isn’t the first portable Blu-ray player. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Fastmac released an external Blu-ray player back in January at Macworld , which I believe was the first external Blu-ray drive

It’s endless: Xbox 360 price cut expected to be announced tomorrow
Aug 27, 2009 Technology

England has been rocked by yet another episode of soccer hooliganism , but no matter: MCV has confirmed the Xbox 360 price cut will be announced tomorrow. Note the wording: the price cut itself won’t happen tomorrow, just that Microsoft will announce what’s what. You can expect the Xbox 360 Pro to be phased out, and the Xbox 360 Elite to have its price slashed, perhaps by as much as $100 to $299.
